UMass Amherst rallies to down PSU Women’s Ice Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Amherst's ‘A' women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the third period Sunday afternoon to pull out a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State University in exciting fashion.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period.  Freshman Ursula Volosevich (South Boston, Mass.) opened the scoring for PSU just 2:34 into the contest, with an assist from sophomore Katie Barany (Middlesex, Vt.).  UMass came back to tie the game at the 16:39 mark on a goal by senior Molly Eggleston (Burlington, Mass.)

Junior Krista Pettrey (Williston, Vt.) gave Plymouth State the lead back 38 seconds into the second period, with an assist from freshman Amanda Kreamer (Lynn, Mass.)  That turned out to be the only goal of the second period, and PSU took a 3-1 lead midway through the third period when senior Laura Scala (East Falmouth, Mass.) scored from Volosevich.

The home team started its comeback with 5:29 remaining on a goal by senior Kelly Rowe (Longmeadow, Mass.) to make it 3-2.   Adia Sovie tied the game at 3-3 with 4:21 to play, and senior Emily Slotnick (Marian, Mass.) scored the game-winner with just 1:39 remaining, sending the Senior Day crowd happy and into the snowstorm outside.

UMass finished with a whopping 67-14 advantage in shots on goal.  Freshman goaltender Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) had an extremely busy night for the Panthers, making 63 saves.

Plymouth State returns home for the season finale next Saturday (Feb. 18) at Waterville Valley against the MIT Club Team.  PSU defeated the MIT Club earlier this season, 3-2.
