PSU Womens Ice Hockey blanked by Nichols
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomores Denise Cardello (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Candice Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist each Tuesday evening to lead Nichols College to a 4-0 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Bison led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by sophomore Ashley Parker (West Jordan, Utah) four minutes into the contest. Cardello and Ellis scored second-period goals just 13 second apart midway through the second period to give the visitors a 3-0 lead, and junior Katelyn Pfeifer (Natick, Mass.) tallied the final goal in the final minute of the middle period.
Sophomore Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made 23 saves in the Nichols net to post the shutout for the Bison. The 23 shots was a season-high for PSU. Freshman goalie Lauren Bonanni (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 31 saves for PSU in her collegiate debut.
Nichols, which has announced that women's hockey will become a varsity sport in 2008-09 and will be a member of the ECAC Women's East Conference, improved its overall record to 4-5-2. The outcome and statistics will not count for PSU since Nichols is not a varsity team this season.
PSU is home again this Saturday at Waterville Valley with a non-conference game against Cortland State (2:00 p.m.)
