WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Junior defenseman Stephanie Brenman (Newton, Mass.) scored two goals Friday evening, including an empty netter with four seconds remaining, and MIT held on to defeat Plymouth State University, 3-1, in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
It was the first win of the season for the Engineers (1-15-1 overall, 1-14-1 ECAC East), while Plymouth State is still looking for its first victory (0-17-1, 0-15-1 ECAC East). The two teams had tied earlier this year, 2-2. The outcome gives MIT a big advantage over PSU in the battle for the final play-off berth.
Both goaltenders played well for their teams. Junior Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) finished with 39 saves for the Panthers, while freshman Rachel Bowens-Rubin (Loretto, Minn.) earned the win in the MIT goal with 15 saves.
MIT scored two goals in the first three minutes, 13 seconds of the game, and those two goals held up. Brenman put the Engineers on the board with a power play goal at the 2:20 mark, her team-leading sixth of the season. Junior Sara John (Plymouth, Minn.) followed up with an even-strength goal less than a minute later, and the visitors had a quick 2-0 lead.
MIT out shot Plymouth State 32-7 over the first two periods, but had just two goals to show for it. PSU, meanwhile, tallied the only goal of the second period to cut the margin in half. Freshman Elizabeth Murray (Woburn, Mass.) picked up a loose puck in the offensive zone and fired a hard wrist shot through a screen for her team-high eighth of the season.
The Panthers came on strong in the third period and played MIT evenly, but couldn't put one in. Each team had nine shots in the stanza until Brenman scored the empty-netter for the Engineers at 19:56.
PSU came up empty on all five power play attempts, while MIT was 1-for-5.
Plymouth State plays its final home game of the season Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Waterville Valley. It will be Senior Day as PSU hosts Salve Regina. MIT moves on to play Castleton State Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
