Saint Michaels edges PSU Womens Ice Hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Saint Michael's College scored three unanswered goals in the last 10 minutes of the game Friday night to pull out a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State University in ECAC Women's East Conference ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena, the final game of the semester for both teams.
Junior Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H.) led the Purple Knights with a pair of goals, including an insurance marker with 2:17 remaining. Saint Michael's trailed for the first 50 minutes of the game, but earned the win with the three-goal rally. SMC improves to 2-8-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the ECAC East, while win-starved PSU fell to 0-7-0 overall and in conference play.
Plymouth State took a 2-0 first-period lead on a pair of short-handed goals. Freshman Jaimie Camara (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored on a breakaway just 1:14 into the contest, and classmate Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.) snapped a shot into the top corner at the 10:30 mark for her first career score, with an assist from sophomore Ashley Goodridge (Stratham, N.H.), to make it 2-0.
Saint Michael's got on the board with 1:37 remaining in the first period on Biron's first of the game. It stayed 2-1 in favor of PSU through the end of the second period, despite the Purple Knights owning a 27-14 advantage in shots.
The visitors turned up the heat in the third period, out-shooting the Panthers 23-4 in the final 20 minutes. PSU senior goaltender Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) kept the lead on PSU's side with numerous outstanding saves.
The Purple Knights finally evened the score at the 10:31 mark on a goal by junior Molly DiMasi (Burlington, Vt.), and senior Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt.) gave Saint Michael's the lead at 13:24. Biron iced the win with her team-leading sixth of the season at 17:44.
DeLorie finished with 46 saves for PSU, while Saint Michael's sophomore Alysia Goldman (Bolliston Lake, N.Y.) made 16 saves to post her first win of the season.
Plymouth State opens the second semester with a three-game trip to Minnesota from Jan. 9-12, where they will face St. Catherine's, Augsburg and Bethel College.
The Purple Knights will open the second semester by hosting the Saint Michael's Holiday Tournament on Jan. 2-3.
