WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.) scored two goals apiece Friday evening to lead Saint Anselm College to a 10-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Arena.
Zappen also collected two assists and Dougherty added one helper as the Hawks improved to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. Sophomore Jaimie Camara (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Danielle Shea (Billerica, Mass.) potted goals for the Panthers in the setback.
The Hawks just about put the game away in the first period with five unanswered goals, two from Zappen and one each from Dougherty, freshman Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wis.). The margin was extended to 7-0 in the second period on goals by senior Daniella Lyons (Greene, Maine) and freshman Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.).
The Panthers got on the board just 35 seconds into the third period when sophomore Tina Worley (Anchorage, Alaska) set up Camara for her team-leading third goal of the season. Dougherty answered for Saint Anselm just 22 seconds later to stop any Panther momentum. Sophomore Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) and junior Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with goals late in the period, and Shea added a power play goal for PSU with assists from Camara and sophomore Molly Blaine (Concord, N.H.)
Saint Anselm finished with a 46-11 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.) made nine saves to earn the win in the Hawks' goal. Sophomore Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Lauren Bonanni (Ridgefield, Conn.) combined to make 36 saves in the Panther goal.
The Hawks wrap up a weekend road trip Saturday with a visit to the University of Southern Maine for a 4:00 p.m. conference match-up. Plymouth State is back on the ice on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Holy Cross for an ECAC East contest.
