Collins and Wyatt score goals for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) and sophomore Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.) combined for five goals and six assists Friday night as Holy Cross College defeated Plymouth State University, 9-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s East hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
Hochkins notched a natural hat trick in the second period, with English collecting assists on all three goals. Hochkins finished with four goals and two assists, while English wound up with a goal and four assists. The Crusaders went on to their third straight win, improving to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the ECAC East.
Plymouth State got a pair of third-period goals from freshmen Allison Collins (Murrietta, Ga.), her second of the season, and Tasha Wyatt (Minturn, Colo.), her first career score. Junior Bri Davis (Framingham, Mass.) collected assists on both goals. The Panthers have scored exactly two goals in all six games this season, but fell to 0-5-1 both overall and in ECAC East games.
Freshman Emily Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period on a Crusader power play, intercepting a clearing attempt by the Panthers and snapping the puck through traffic and just inside the right goalpost. Holy Cross had a 17-7 advantage in shots in the first 20 minutes but only a one-goal lead.
The Crusaders put the game away in the second period with five unanswered goals. English finished off a 2-on-1 with Hochkins at 2:57, and Hochkins scored her first goal of the night just 21 seconds later. Hochkins finished off her hat trick with goals at 15:33 and 18:40 to make it a 5-0 game, and junior Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) knocked in a rebound with 20 seconds left in the period to put Holy Cross up 6-0 after two.
Senior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Sask.) opened the third period goal for Holy Cross with a power play goal at the 5:54 mark. Collins put PSU on the board a minute later to break up the shutout. Junior Amy Pfund (Tenafly, N.J.) tipped home a shot by freshman Devon Ball (Burlington, Ont.) at 7:40, and Hochkins rounded out the scoring for the visitors with her fourth of the night and 11th of the season. Wyatt notched her first career goal for PSU on the power play at 18:08.
Both teams changes goalies after the second period. Senior Monique Gallant (Antogonish, N.S.) improved to 4-0-0 in the Crusader goal with 11 saves, and classmate Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, B.C.) came on and made four saves in the third period. Freshmen Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Nicole Crandle (Bristol, Conn.) combined for 48 saves in the Panther goal.
PSU is back on home ice Saturday, hosting Salve Regina in an ECAC East game at 3:00 p.m. Holy Cross moves on to Southern Maine for a conference match-up Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
