Nichols holds off PSU Women’s Hockey
Blaine scores twice for Panthers
HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Freshman Megan Gerein scored two goals Saturday evening to lead the Nichols College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Women's East game at the June Rockwell Levy Rink.
Junior Molly Blaine scored two third-period goals for PSU to cut the margin to 3-2, and the Panthers out-shot the Bison 20-7 in the final frame and 35-34 for the game, but Nichols held on for the win.
Nichols got on the board first when Gerein picked up a rebound in the slot and shot it past the goaltender at 10:07 into the first period. The Bison struck again with a minute to go in the period when Gerein slid the puck past the diving goaltender for her second of the game.
Nichols took full advantage of a power play opportunity midway through the second period, when junior Mandy Monopla shoveled the puck past the goalie after junior Krista-Jean Forand shot the puck under the goaltender's pads.
The Panthers came out toe-to-toe with Nichols in the third, and 9:47 into the period they were rewarded when Blaine received a rebound in the slot and fired the puck into the net, cutting the lead down to two. At 18:47, Blaine scored again on a power play chance sliding the puck five hole for the goal.
Penalties plagued Nichols in the third and kept it shorthanded most of the stanza. However, superb play from the penalty kill unit allowed just one goal in six attempts to keep Nichols on top for a 3-2 victory.
Freshman goalie Francesca Palazzo earned the win for Nichols, making 33 saves, while freshman Ali Ponte mades 31 saves.
Nichols travels to UMass Boston on Friday, while Plymouth State resumes play Wednesday at Holy Cross.
