Panthers fall to conference leaders
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women’s ice hockey team had 16 different players on the score sheet Monday night in a 12-0 rout of Plymouth State University in ECAC Women’s East action at Kreitzberg Arena.
Renee Lortie, Sophie Leclerc and Sarah Scardino each potted two goals apiece to lead the NU offense. Lortie and Leclerc each had an assist as well to tie with Julie Fortier for the team-high of three points as the junior forward had a goal and two assists as well.
Norwich needs three more points in its remaining four conference games to clinch home ice advantage and the ECAC East regular season crown for the first time. The Cadets (16-3-1, 13-0-1) are unbeaten in their last 10 games and remained perfect in 2011.
The Cadets, who are ranked #4 nationally, got first period goals from Leclerc, Fortier, Lortie, and Kayla Parsons. Parsons’ tally to make it 4-0 was deflected off a Plymouth State player’s shoulder and into the back of the net for her first career goal in the Maroon and Gold. Fortier tallied an assist on Lortie’s goal for her 50th career assist.
Norwich added six more goals in the second period with tallies from Lortie, Haley Gibson, Leclerc, Meghan Papagno, Scardino and Jillayne DeBus. The Cadets capped the score sheet with two more tallies in the third period from Scardino and Kelsey Cone.
Norwich freshman goalie Kelly Fisk made eight saves to pick up her first career shutout and second win of the season. Plymouth State goaltender Ali Ponte turned aside 41 shots.
Plymouth State plays its final home games of the season this weekend, hosting New England College on Friday and Castleton on Saturday.
