Panthers no match for defending national champs

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Defending national champion Norwich University spoiled the season opener for the Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team, blanking the Panthers 14-0 Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

The Cadets (4-1 overall) extended their ECAC East regular season unbeaten streak to 24 straight games. Norwich established a new program record with the 14 goals to break its old single-game mark of 12.

Freshman Tyne Gove tallied her first career hat trick, pacing the offense with three goals and one assist. Senior Melissa Rundlett added a goal and four assists, while senior Mollie Fitzpatrick chipped in with two goals and an assist.

Sophomores Ali Ponte and Nicole Crandle split time in the Panther goal, Ponte finishing 16 saves in the first 25 minutes and Crandle making 21 saves over the last 35 minutes.

PSU plays the second half of its weekend trip to Vermont Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Saint Michael's College.  Norwich returns to action Saturday when the Cadets host Southern Maine at 3 p.m.
