Panthers pick up first point of season
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Kelsey Cosby recorded a goal and an assist Saturday afternoon as the Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against Saint Michael's College in ECAC Women's East action at Cairns Arena.
Cosby scored the first goal of the game midway through the second period, and assisted on PSU's goal five minutes into the third period that put the Panthers ahead temporarily, 2-1. Saint Michael's scored the equalizer three and a half minutes later and the final 12 minutes of regulation and five minutes of overtime couldn't decide a winner.
PSU (0-1-1) records its first point of the season and first for new head coach Ashley Kilstein, as the Panthers rebounded from a lop-sided loss to national champion Norwich on Friday night. Saint Michael's is now 0-3-1.
The host Purple Knights had a 12-9 advantage in shot in the first period but neither team was able to crack the scoreboard. Cosby finally scored the first PSU goal of the season at the 12:48 mark of the second, with an assist from senior Abby Van Wormer. The Purple Knights answered with just 1:10 remaining in the second period when Kristen Spulecki tied the game at 1-1 heading into the third.
Cosby set up sophomore Ali Myers for the go-ahead goal at 5:13 of the third period, but Madelena Santore tallied a power play marker at 8:37 to even the score at 2-2.
Saint Michael's finished with a 41-38 advantage in shots, although PSU had a 4-2 margin in the overtime. PSU sophomore goaltender Ali Ponte made 39 saves while Erin Stevens made 36 saves at the other end of the ice.
PSU returns home for its first two games on home ice next weekend at Hanaway Rink, as the Panthers host Castleton State College Friday (Nov. 18) at 6:00 p.m. and New England College Saturday (Nov. 19) at 2:30 p.m.
