Newmark scores twice for Panthers
HENNIKER, N.H. – Four different players scored goals Saturday afternoon to lead the New England College women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 ECAC East win against the Panthers of Plymouth State University at Lee Clement Arena.
Junior Stephanie Newmark (Sydney, Australia) provided the highlights for PSU, scoring a pair of goals for PSU's first two goals of the season.
Freshman Rachel Vigliano (Monroe, N.J.) gave the Pilgrims the early lead by collecting a pass on the wing and launching it towards the goal, beating the Plymouth State goaltender just 2:27 into the game. NEC would extend the lead to 3-0 in the second period as Aubrey Fischer (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Chelsie Boroski (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored just 3:37 and 5:09 into the frame. Fischer scored by collecting the puck off a Plymouth State turnover on their defensive blue line and carried it to just inside the right hash marks, where she fired the unassisted shot into the upper left corner. Boroski also scored on the power play, collecting passes from Alyssa Hoot (Waterville, Ohio) and Morgan Braniff (Tustin, Calif.).
Plymouth State would capitalize on a power play opportunity late in the second period, as Kelsey Colby (Walpole, Mass.) fed the puck into the crease and Newmark tipped it in to put the Panthers on the board.
NEC regained a three-goal lead in the third period when Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) floated the puck on the net untouched, and Kate Kellar (Chesire, Mass.) wrapped it around the pipe to give the Pilgrims the 4-1 edge with 11:27 to play. Newmark would net on her second goal of the game on the power play two minutes later, connecting on a loose puck in the crease. Marissa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) and Tasha Wyatt (Minturn, Colo.) registered assists on the goal.
NEC goaltender Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wisc.) recorded 14 saves en route to the win, while Plymouth State's goaltender Nicole Crandle (Bristol, Conn.) totaled 25 saves as the Pilgrims claimed the 29-16 shot advantage.
Both team will be back in action with ECAC East matchups on Friday, November 30, as NEC (3-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 ECAC East) travels to Saint Anselm College and PSU (0-4-0, 0-4-0) faces Manhattanville College at Terry Conners Rink, Stamford, Conn.
