Colby skates past PSU Women’s Ice Hockey

Ponte posts career-high 62 saves for Panthers

WATERVILLE, Maine – Goaltender Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) recorded a shutout and Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass.) tallied a hat trick Tuesday night as Colby College posted a 4-0 win over Plymouth State University in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Alfond Rink.

Plymouth State junior goaltender Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made a career-high 62 saves in the game as Colby had 66 shots on goal. She had 22 stops in the opening period, 15 in the middle period, and 25 in the final 20 minutes.  Ponte's previous single-game standard was a 54-save performance against Connecticut College last January.

Wheeler had 11 saves for the Mules before giving way to Olivia Rivera (Sayville, N.Y.) for the final 3:14.

Colby, 3-4 overall, struck first with the extra player at 8:21 of the opening period. Wheeler completed a long pass to Natalie Fischer (Freeland, Md.), who promptly found Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass.) for the goal.  The Mules went ahead 2-0 when Guarente scored her second of three goals on the night at 16:36. Maddie Dewhirst (Hanover, N.H.) and Meredith Reynolds (Marion, Mass.) each recorded their second assists of the season.

Guarente made it three straight goals at 6:22 of the second period off a pass from freshman Megan Fortier (Falmouth, Maine).  Sylvia Xistris (Larchmont, N.Y.) added the final goal with just 55 seconds to play after she was the recipient after a nice passing sequence between Kathy Shei (Iverness, Ill.) and Breanna Davis (Andover, N.H.).

PSU plays its sixth straight road game this Friday at Franklin Pierce University before hosting the Ravens Saturday in the second half of the weekend home-and-home series.
