Holy Cross skates past PSU Women’s Ice Hockey

Klimasewiski's hat trick leads Crusaders past Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Mary Klimasewiski (Colchester, Conn.) scored three goals and senior Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.) added a pair Friday evening as the College of Holy Cross defeated Plymouth State University, 5-0, in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East Conference ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.

The Crusaders led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 late in the second period when Campione and Klimasewiski scored consecutive goals just 19 seconds apart to double the lead.  Klimasewiski added a beautiful shorthanded goal late in the third period to finish off her hat trick as Holy Cross improved to 12-4-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the ECAC East.

Sophomore goalie Krista Manzanares (Rancho Sana Margarita, Calif.) made 15 saves for the Crusaders to post her second shutout and improve to 7-2 on the season. PSU junior goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had another busy night and finished with 35 saves as Holy Cross out-shot the home team, 40-15.  PSU had its three-game conference unbeaten streak stopped (1-0-2) and fell to 3-13-2 overall, 2-7-2 in league play.

Klimasewiski opened the scoring for Holy Cross late in the first period when she collected a drop pass from sophomore Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) along the left boards and skated in on net before firing a wrister past the goalie.  Campione made it 2-0 seven minutes into the middle frame when she took a breakaway pass from senior Alyssa Ruhland (Minneapolis, Minn.) along the right side and fired a shot top shelf, giving Ponte no chance.

The Crusaders put the game out of reach late in the second when Campione was in the slot and deflected home a shot by Fleming for a power play goal at 17:22, her second of the game and seventh of the season, and Klimasewiski followed at 17:41 with her second of the night to push the score to 4-0.

Klimasewiski rounded out the scoring with a short-hander with two minutes to play in the final period, as she stole the puck at her own blue line and skated down the right-hand side of the ice and fired a slap shot over the goalie's shoulder just inside the far post. It was her third of the night and fifth of the season.

Both teams play conference games again on Saturday, as PSU hosts Salve Regina University at 2:00 p.m. and Holy Cross visits the University of Southern Maine for a 1:00 p.m. face-off.
