Panthers come up empty against Seahawks
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Seniors Rachel Porter (Franklin, Mass.) and Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.) registered a goal and an assist each Saturday afternoon as Salve Regina University defeated Plymouth State University, 4-0, in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
The Seahawks finished with a 33-10 advantage in shots on goal, scoring once in the first period before pulling away with two goals in the second stanza. Freshman Britani Dunbar (Swampscott, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with her first career goal in the third period. Salve Regina won its fourth straight game and improved to 12-7-0 overall and 8-4-0 in the ECAC East, while PSU dips to 3-14-2 overall, 2-8-2 in league play.
Senior goalie Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) stopped all 10 Panther shots she faced in the first 58 minutes before giving way to freshman reserve Mariah Mosher (Auburn, Maine) for the final two minutes. PSU junior netminder Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made 29 saves in the Panther goal.
Salve out-shot PSU 14-4 in the opening frame but didn't get on the scoreboard until the 14:31 mark. Porter got a crossing pass on the left from sophomore Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) and snapped a wrist shot to the top left for her fifth goal of the season.
Porter set up the Seahawks' second goal five minutes into the second period, firing a shot from the left point that was deflected in front of the goal by freshman Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) for her 10th of the season. Zitzer broke in alone on the goalie after making nice move around a defender with five minutes to go in the second period, and roofed a shot for her fifth of the campaign and a 3-0 Seahawk lead through two.
Dunbar finished off the scoring with 7:30 remaining in the game, knocking home a rebound after Ponte made a stop of a shot by freshman Molly O'Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.)
PSU will be on the road for a conference pair next weekend, visiting Saint Michael's College on Friday and Norwich University on Saturday. Salve Regina returns home for a weekend series, hosting UMass Boston on Friday and Saint Anselm College on Saturday.
