Panthers to make first ECAC East play-off appearance
BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Meghan Cassidy (Somerville, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season a minute, 31 seconds in overtime Saturday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in the ECAC East women's ice hockey regular season finale for both teams at the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
Cassidy's goal, which was scored on the power-play, snuck past UMB goaltender Casey Schjaebe (Arlington, Mass.) to stun the Beacons. UMB outshot Plymouth State 47-20, but was held to one first-period goal.
The win gives PSU momentum as it heads into its first ECAC East play-off berth in its six years in the league. The Panthers improved to a program-best 5-16-4 overall and 4-10-4 in the conference to earn the No. 8 seed and will travel to No. 1 seed Norwich University next Saturday.
The Beacons fell to 8-13-4, 5-9-4 in the ECAC East and will be the sixth seed in next week's ECAC East tournament. UMB will travel to No. 3 Castleton State College next Saturday for a first-round game.
Junior Allison Collins (Murrietta, Calif.) scored the first goal of the day for the Panthers at the 11:32 mark off of Kelsey Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) and Cassidy assists. Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.) scored the lone goal for UMB at 15:14 of the first period, her team leading 10th of the year.
That remained the extent of the scoring until the overtime game-winner despite UMB's large shot total. Anchoring Plymouth State's defensive line was junior netminder Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who made 46 saves on 47 shots. Schaejbe totaled 18 saves for the Beacons.
