Castleton skates past PSU Women’s Ice Hockey in home opener
Collins and Zamrock score goals for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Nicoline Jensen (Hellerup, Denmark) scored two goals and assisted on another Friday night to lead Castleton State College to a 7-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East Conference ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
The game was tied 2-2 at the midway point but the Spartans erupted for three goals in a four-minute span late in the second period to take the lead for good, and added goals in the first and last minute of the third frame. Castleton improves to 3-2 overall this season and 1-0 in conference play, while PSU drops to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC Women's East.
Senior Allison Collins (Murrieta, Calif.) and sophomore Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) scored second-period goals for Plymouth State to tie the game at 2-2, with Zamrock's goal coming while the Panthers were short-handed.
Freshman Kimberly Gosselin (Concord, N.H.) and junior BriAnna Narodowy (North Smithfield, R.I.) also collected a goal and two assists each for the winners.
Junior Jessica Spidle (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the first period for the visitors, skating all the way up ice with the puck before snapping a shot over the goalie's shoulder just under the cross bar for her first career marker. Sophomore Samantha Pion (Easthampton, Mass.) extended the lead to 2-0 a minute into the second period with her first of the season when she knocked in a rebound off a shot by sophomore Anna Daniels (Falun, Sweden).
Collins put the Panthers on the board at the 2:40 mark of the second period on a play set up by freshman Lauren Connelly (Braintree, Mass.), who skated up the left side as fired a shot towards the net. Connelly's shot was broken up in front of the net, but Collins collected the loose puck and lifted it over the fallen goaltender. Zamrock evened the score a little more than a minute later after the Panthers were whistled for a penalty; a clearing attempt by junior Kelsey Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) was deflected, sending Zamrock in on a breakaway, and she buried the puck to even the score at 2-all.
The Spartans took control late in the middle frame. Freshman Michelle Baillargeon (Clayton, Ont.) slid a back-hander past the goalie from behind the net near the left post at 14:47; Jensen followed just 28 seconds later when she cut to the inside from the right wing and snuck a shot inside the left post; and Narodowy finished off the rally when she collected a pass from Gosselin in front of the net and found the back of the goal.
Castleton rounded out the scoring in the third period when Gosselin connected on a pass from Narodowy in the left corner a minute in, and Jensen tallied her second of the game with less than three seconds remaining.
Junior Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) earned the win in the Castleton goal with 17 saves, while senior Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made 34 saves for PSU as the Spartans finished with a 41-19 advantage in shots on goal.
The Panthers are home again Saturday for a conference game against New England College (2:00 p.m.) while Castleton moves on to visit the University of Southern Maine Saturday for a 1:00 p.m face-off.
