PSU Women’s Ice Hockey blanks New England College
Hickey scores game-winner for Panthers; Ponte posts shutout
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Shannon Hickey (Arlington, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game late in the second period Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University skated past New England College, 1-0, in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East Conference ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
Senior goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made 34 saves for PSU to post her second career shutout. Junior Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wisc.) was also strong in the NEC goal, finishing with 41 saves as Plymouth State out-shot the visitors by a 42-20 count.
PSU peppered Hopps with 19 shots in the first period but the teams remained scoreless at the first intermission. The Panthers continued with the advantage in the second period and finally broke through with a power play goal by Hickey at 17:24. Sophomore Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) slid a pass to Hickey to the left of the goalie and she lifted it over the goalie's shoulder for her second of the season. It was PSU's first power play goal in five tries in the period.
The Pilgrims had three power play chances in the third period but the Panther defense held its ground and PSU recorded its first conference win of the season.
PSU hits the road for an ECAC East weekend series next Friday and Saturday at Manhattanville College and Nichols College, respectively. NEC returns home to host Saint Michael's College and Norwich University in the home openers next Friday and Saturday.
