Leon scores lone goal for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) scored a pair of unassisted goals Saturday afternoon to lead Franklin Pierce University to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
For the second straight day PSU held a 1-0 lead in the second period and was tied 1-1 in the third, but the Ravens out-shot the Panthers 22-6 and scored three times in the final stanza to secure the win. Freshman goalie Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) made 24 saves in the Raven goal to remain undefeated (6-0) in the season.
Franklin Pierce won its third game in a row to improve to 12-2 overall; the Ravens finished 7-14 last season in their first year at the varsity level. PSU dropped to 3-10 on the season.
Sophomore Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass.) scored the Panther goal midway through the first period, but that ended up as the extent of the Panther offense. Senior goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ontario) made 41 saves, including 19 in the third period, as Franklin Pierce out-shot PSU 45-25 for the game.
Leon put the Panthers on the board at 12:36 of the opening period with her second goal of the season. Sophomore Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa.) won a face-off in the left circle of the offensive zone, and Leon sent a backhander towards the net that got past O'Neil low to the right side.
PSU maintained the lead until Ketterman scored her first goal of the game and sixth of the season at 7:15 of the middle period. She stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Ponte, firing a shot over her should to even the score at 1-1. The Ravens out-shot PSU 23-19 through two periods, with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
Sophomore Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) scored the game-winner for FPU just a minute into the third period, snapping a shot from the slot for her team-leading 11th of the season. Ketterman followed with her second of the game and seventh of the season on another breakaway at 4:37, and senior Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a power play goal at 13:50, her second of the year.
Plymouth State returns to ECAC Women's East action next Friday with a 6:00 p.m. face-off at Hanaway Rink against Norwich University. Franklin Pierce plays again on Tuesday with a visit to Salve Regina University (7:00 p.m.)
