PSU Women’s Ice Hockey skates to tie with Saint Michael’s
Gelinas scores go-ahead goal for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a power play goal with 2:04 left in regulation Saturday afternoon and Saint Michael's College and Plymouth State University skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday in Eastern College Athletic Conference women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
The Panthers pulled ahead eight minutes into the third period on a goal by freshman Justine Gelinas (Lac Drolet, Que.), but Dwyer tallied the equalizer with the clock winding down. PSU out-shot the visitors 4-2 in the overtime but the teams settled for the draw. The Panthers moved to 3-11-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the ECAC East, while the Purple Knights are now 1-11-2 overall and 0-7-1 in conference play.
Senior goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made 28 saves in the PSU goal, while freshman Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass.) stopped 30 shots in the SMC goal.
Plymouth State out-shot Saint Michael's 11-8 in both the first and second periods, but both goalies held their ground. The visitors had three power play chances and PSU one but neither could convert.
Gelinas potted for first career goal for PSU in the third period, snapping a shot from the slot that went off Frasca and into the goal. Sophomore Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Kate Banys (Newburyport, Mass.) were credited with assists on the goal.
PSU drew a penalty with 2:12 remaining and it took just eight seconds to capitalize. Ponte made a save on junior Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y.) but Dwyer knocked in the rebound for her fourth of the season.
PSU continues its seven-game home stand Tuesday with a non-conference game vs. Wesleyan University. Saint Michael's plays a non-league game Tuesday at Franklin Pierce.
