Gelinas scores lone Panther goal; Crandle makes 24 saves in goal
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A pair of first-period unassisted goals by senior Sam Slotnick (Canterbury, Conn.) and sophomore Kat Mackey (Columbia, Md.) were all Colby College needed Tuesday evening as the Mules nipped Plymouth State University, 2-1, in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
Colby had the shot advantage in the first and third periods while PSU out-shot the visitors in the middle frame. PSU freshman Justine Gelinas (Lac Drolet, Que.) scored midway through the second period to cut the deficit in half but that ended up as all the scoring in the game. The Mules improve to 7-11-2 overall while the Panthers slide to 4-17-2.
Senior Bri Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) earned the win in the Colby net with an 18-save performance. PSU senior Nicole Crandle (Bristol, Conn.) was strong in net at the other end, making 24 stops.
The Mules took the lead six minutes into the contest when Slotnick potted a short-handed goal, her third of the season. She applied solid pressure on the forecheck, stealing the puck along the right boards and breaking in alone before snapping a shot up under the crossbar. Colby doubled its lead seven minutes later when Mackey fired a shot from the right point that made it through traffic and past Crandle. The Mules out-shot the Panthers 12-6 in the opening stanza and led 2-0.
PSU came back to out-shoot the Mules 11-5 in the second period, in part due to three power play opportunities. Gelinas scored the only goal of the frame for PSU for her fourth of the season, deflecting a pass from the left-wing side by junior Kate Banys (Newburyport, Mass.) at the 10:12 mark.
Scoring chances were few and far between in the third period as each team had just one power play try and Colby had a 9-2 shot advantage. The Mules kept the puck in the Panther end of the ice in the final minute, preventing PSU from pulling its goalie.
Colby finished 0-for-2 on the power play while PSU was 0-for-6 with the extra skater.
PSU wraps up the regular season with a pair of ECAC Women's East games this weekend against UMass Boston on Friday (6:00 p.m.) and Saint Anselm College on Senior Day on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) Colby is back on the ice with a pair of NESCAC games Friday and Saturday at Wesleyan University.
