Leon named to All-Tournament Team for Panthers
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Steph DiPietro (Quincy, Mass.) scored two goals Saturday afternoon, including the game-winner, as Hamilton College defeated Plymouth State University, 5-3, on the second day of the Doubletree Women's Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena, hosted by Saint Michael's College.
PSU led 3-2 late in the second period before the Continentals tied the score just before the second intermission, and then tacked on two third-period goals to pull out the win.
Junior Hannah Bartlett (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Parkman (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) both had one goal and one assist for Hamilton, which improved to 4-4-2. Senior Sarah Schuchardt (Verona, Wis.) made four third-period stops to nab the win after freshman Sam Walther (Gambrills, Md.) had 15 saves in the first 40 minutes. Parkman and sophomore Megan Ahern (Oswego, N.Y./Millbrook School) were both named to the all-tournament team.
Senior Kate Banys (Newburyport, Mass.) netted a pair of tallies for Plymouth State, while junior Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass.) also found the back of the net. Freshman goaltender Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kan.) made 35 saves. Leon was PSU's representative on the All-Tournament Team.
Hamilton scored the only goal of the opening period with 3:10 to go, as DiPietro slid a back-handed shot from the slot that snuck past a screened Trupp. The teams combined for five second-period goals, with Plymouth State scoring the first two in a matter of 1:47. Junior Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) made a pass from the left goal line extended into the slot to Banys, whose one-timer hit the upper right corner at 1:28. Leon put the Panthers in front during a power play, finding a rebound at the right post at 3:15.
Hamilton scored twice in the final 8:59 of the period, sandwiched around Banys' second of the game. Gosselin redirected a teammate's pass from the hash marks into the lower left side to knot the contest at 11:01, but Banys picked the upper left corner from above the right circle 2:49. At 18:23, the Continentals again tied the game, this time as Parkman sent a shot from the slot that was blocked into a Plymouth State skater, but as the Panther spun away, the puck was sent into the net.
The Continentals pulled out the win in the third period, as DiPietro one-timed home Ahern's pass just inside the left post 7:12 into play, and at 13:55, Bartlett netted a power-play marker, picking the upper right corner from high in the left circle.
Plymouth State, 1-12-1, returns to ECAC Women's East Conference action next Friday with a 4:00 p.m. face-off at Castleton State College.
