Altschuler makes 42 saves; Leon scores game-winner for Panthers
RYE, N.Y. – Junior Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 52.8 seconds remaining in overtime Friday evening to lift Plymouth State University to a 4-3 victory over Manhattanville College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East ice hockey game at Playland Ice Casino.
PSU held leads of 2-0 and 3-2 before Manhattanville came back to tie the game 3-3 five minutes into the third period. The Valiants out-shot the visitors 44-15 in the 60 minutes of regulation, including 9-2 in the third period, but the Panthers put five shots on goal in the extra session to one for Manhattanville. PSU junior goaltender junior Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) stole the show as she turned away 42 of the 45 Manhattanville shots.
Valiant senior goalie Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn.) made an initial save on a shot from junior Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa.) in overtime, but the rebound landed just out of the reach out of the Valiant netminder where Leon was able to lift the puck over the sprawled-out Shaughnessy for the game-winner.
The Panthers improved to 3-13-1 overall and 3-6 in the ECAC East, while Manhattanville is now 6-7-4 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play. The win was the first for PSU in 11 career meetings against the Valiants. The Panthers were shut out by lopsided scores in seven of the first eight games before falling 5-2 and 4-2 the last two seasons.
The Valiants dominated the first period, outshooting the Panthers 17-7. Despite the discrepancy, the Panthers held a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the competition as goals from senior Cortney Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) and junior Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) had Plymouth State sitting pretty early in the game.
With the pressure applied by the Valiants it was only a matter of time before the team finally got on the board. With just 1:08 remaining in the first period, senior forward Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario) tallied her third goal of the year, as she gathered the puck in the high slot area and ripped the puck over the blocker shoulder of Altschuler.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the second period, junior Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H.) quickly pulled the Valiants even on a great individual effort. After lifting the stick of a Panthers defenseman, Herbert quickly turned towards goal and fired a shot upstairs, over the glove of Altschuler to even the score at two.
Despite dominating possession and scoring chances the Valiants found themselves again trailing when Plymouth State buried its third goal of the game, on just their second shot of the period, at the 9:30 mark of the second. The goal was scored by sophomore Frederike Brazeau Lalonde (Thetford Mines, Que.), her first career marker.
The Panthers would control the lead until the Valiants drew even at the 4:49 mark of the third period when sophomore Kayley Romano (Viera, Fla.) put home the rebound of a Monika Molnar (Budapest, Hungary) blast from the high slot. The goal, Romano's second of the season, would eventually send the game to overtime.
Both teams have another conference matchup Saturday afternoon as Manhattanville takes on New England College at Playland Ice Casino and Plymouth State visits Salve Regina University.
