Cosby scores lone goal for Panthers
GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Women's East game Friday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the Huskies' third in the last four games, and improved their record to 7-12-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the league. The Panthers, winless in their last four games (0-3-1), fell to 3-16-2 overall and 3-9-1 in ECAC action. The two teams will meet again February 20 at Plymouth State.
Couture gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 1:48 of the opening period on a nice play from behind the net by junior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.). Junior Kaleigh Heath (Jericho, Vt.) doubled the Huskies advantage at 16:21 when her shot from the top of the right-wing circle found its way past PSU junior goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.). Senior Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) earned the lone assist.
Couture's team-leading 10th goal of the season at 6:52 of the middle period made it 3-0 for the home side. Couture stole the puck at the PSU blue line to skate in and beat Altschuler with a 20-foot wrist shot for the unassisted marker.
Plymouth State got one back late in the period when senior Kelsey Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) beat USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) to the puck in a scramble in front of the USM goal and pushed the puck by Bergstrom for her fifth goal of the season.
Neither team would score in the final period as Bergstrom and Altschuler kept the offenses at bay. Bergstrom finished the game with 13 saves while Altschuler stopped 18 shots at the other end.
Southern Maine is on the road Saturday (4:40 p.m.) traveling the Harrisville, R.I., to play Nichols College. Plymouth State will be at home on Saturday (6:00 p.m.) hosting Castleton State College.
