Nichols gets past PSU Women’s Ice Hockey

Brazeau Lalonde scores two goals for Panthers in season finale

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Seniors Alyssa Bufis (Linden, N.J.) and Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) combined for three goals and five assists Saturday afternoon as Nichols College defeated Plymouth State University, 5-2, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East ice hockey regular season finale at Hanaway RInk.

The outcome puts the Bison in seventh place in the ECAC East with a 5-12-0 league record, 8-17-0 overall, while PSU drops into ninth place at 3-13-1 in conference play, and 3-20-2 overall. Nichols will be the seventh seed in next week's ECAC East playoffs, while PSU will miss the post-season.

Bufis tallied two goals and two assists for the Bison, including a goal and two helpers in the third period after PSU had come from behind to tie the game at 2-2, while Murphy added a goal and two assists.  Bufis and Murphy share the team lead with 10 goals apiece. Senior Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted the win in goal for Nichols, making 19 saves.

Sophomore Frederike Brazeau Lalonde (Thetford Mines, Que.) scored both Panther goals, each time tying the score for the determined Panthers. Junior Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) made 31 saves in the setback.

After a scoreless first period, Bufis put the Bison on the board two minutes into the second frame, converting a 2-on-1 with Murphy by ripping a shot past Altschuler. Nichols had a chance to make it 2-0 two minutes later but Altschuler denied freshman Laura Christie (Hudson, Mass.) on a clean breakaway.

Brazeau Lalond scored the first equalizer for PSU six minutes into the period, chipping a backhander over the goalie after a nice back-handed pass from junior Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass.), but the Bison took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission after junior Erin Dice (Ashburn, Va.) put in her own rebound with two minutes remaining in the period.

PSU came back to tie the game at 2-2 two minutes into the third period when Brazeau Lalonde knocked in a rebound after a save on a shot by sophomore Emily Auby (Stoughton, Wisc.)

Senior Jordan Fencl (Amana, Wis.) potted the game-winner for Nichols midway through the third period, poking in a rebound after Altschuler made the initial save. Murphy tacked on an insurance goal with 3:08 remaining, collecting a loose puck in the slot after a shot from the point was blocked, turning and firing a shot just inside the right post. Bufis finished off the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute.

PSU recognized its three seniors prior to the game on Senior Day (left) – assistant captains Kate Banys (Newburyport, Mass.) and Kelsey Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) and captain Cortney Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.)
