Altschuler makes 25 saves for Panthers in Puck Drop Classic
HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team dropped its season opener Friday afternoon, falling to Endicott College, 2-0, in the first game of the Puck Drop Classic hosted by Nichols College at Levy Rink. Endicott posted the victory in its first game as a NCAA Division III varsity program.
Freshman Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) put the Gulls ahead 1-0 at the 11:11 mark of the first period after sliding a puck between the legs of a Panthers' defenseman and burying a wrist shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Endicott proceeded to add to its advantage in the second (10:56) as freshman defenseman Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.) fired a shot past Plymouth State goaltender Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) into the back of the net for a 2-0 gap.
Defensively, the Gulls blocked 11 shots throughout the entire game to aid freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) in recording the first shutout in program history. Jonsson finished the contest with 17 saves, while Altschuler finished with 25 saves at the other end.
Plymouth State will play Buffalo State in the early game of the Puck Drop Classic Saturday at 12:40 p.m., and Endicott takes on Nichols College at 3:40 p.m.
