Leon named to All-Tournament Team for Panthers
HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Buffalo State College Saturday afternoon in the Puck Drop Classic at Levy Rink, hosted by Nichols College. Buffalo State opens the season with back-to-back victories for the first time since 2005-06.
Buffalo State peppered the Plymouth goal with 16 shots in the first period and finally broke through with an unassisted tally by sophomore Caitie Horvatits (Elma, N.Y.) with less than four minutes remaining in the opening frame.
The Bengals struck quickly in the second period on freshman Emma Ruggiero's (Amherst, N.Y.) first collegiate goal with assists by Hannah Desjarlais (Cold Lake, AB) and Alison Mish (Canastota, N.Y.) to push the lead to 2-0 which would hold to the second intermission.
Senior Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team for PSU, finally put the Panthers on the scoreboard with a power-play marker less than five minutes into the final frame, with assists from Courtney Evans (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Haley Branovan (Canandaigua, N.Y.) That was the extent of the scoring as Buffalo State would kill off two more penalties and hold on for the victory.
The Bengals dominated shot totals for the second-consecutive day, outshooting Plymouth State, 42-17. Sophomore Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, Calif.) made 16 saves between the pipes for the win in her first action of the season. Freshman Emelie Lindqvist (Gulleråsen, Sweden) finished with 40 saves for PSU in her collegiate debut.
PSU will open play in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) this coming weekend, visiting Saint Michael's College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and hosting the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the home opener at Hanaway Rink.
