PSU Women’s Ice Hockey nips the Univ. of New England in overtime

Hickey scores game-winner in OT for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Shannon Hickey (Arlington, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime Friday evening as Plymouth State University defeated the University of New England, 3-2, in a women's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game at Hanaway Rink.

The Panthers have won two in a row to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEHC, while UNE is now 0-3 overall and in conference play.

Hickey was sent up the left side of the rink on a pass by junior Frederike Brazeau-Lalonde (Thetford Mines, Que.), and Hickey skated through the left circle and lifted a backhander up and over the goalie's shoulder for her first goal of the season and the game-winner.

Freshman goaltender Emelie Lindqvist (Gullerason, Sweden) made 27 saves to earn the win in the PSU goal. Junior Sydney Helmbrecht (Grand Rapids, Minn.) made 20 saves for UNE.

The teams traded first-period goals. Senior Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa.) scored her second goal of the season for PSU at the 13:58 mark, cutting to the middle and firing a wrist shot through Helmbrecht's pad. UNE came back to tie the game in the final minute of the period when freshman Julianne Sheehan (Chelmsford, Mass.) made a nice move around the defense and slipped a shot past Lindqvist from in close for her first of the season.

PSU pulled ahead 2-1 with just 2:27 to go in the second period. Helmbrecht made a nice save on a shot by freshman Kelsey Roy (Ft. Collins, Colo.), but junior Lauren Connelly (Braintree, Mass.) put home the rebound to give the home team a one-goal lead heading into the third.

UNE tied the game at 3:29 of the third period, as a shot by junior Melissa Boudreau (Lombard, Ill.) deflected off a Panther defenseman in front and went into the net just inside the right post.

The Nor'easters finished with a 29-23 advantage in shots. Both teams were unsuccessful in two power play tries.

The NEHC slate continues Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with PSU visiting Norwich University and UNE moving on to Saint Michael's College.
