Evans scores power play goal for Panthers' lone goal
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman Jess Piracino (Tewksbury, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist Saturday afternoon as Norwich University skated past Plymouth State University, 4-1, in a women's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game at
Sophomore Courtney Evans (Fairbanks, Alaska) tallied a power play goal for Plymouth State late in the second period to pull the Panthers to within a goal at 2-1, but Norwich tacked on a pair of third-period markers to seal the win. PSU had its two-game winning streak stopped and fell to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the NEHC, while Norwich is now 4-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Norwich took a two-goal lead in the first period. Piracini put the Cadets on the board with her first goal of the season at 6:17, and freshman Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alb.) scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 14:07 to put the home team up 2-0.
PSU showed life in the second period and got some offensive pressure on the Norwich net. Evans broke through for the Panthers at 17:31, with an assist from Haley Branovan (Canandaigua, N.Y.) to cut the deficit in half.
The Cadets sealed the win with two goals in the final stanza as sophomore Maki Shuchuk (Madison, Wis.) scored at 3:45 and senior Rachel Bellio (Denver, Colo.) added a power-play marker at 12:17.
Junior Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) captured the win in the Norwich net, making 10 saves. Senior Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) made 10 saves and allowed only one goal in the first 14 minutes before freshman Emelie Lindqvist (Gullerason, Sweden) came on and made 26 saves the rest of the way.
PSU is back in action next Friday night with an NEHC road game at Holy Cross (7:05 p.m.) Norwich continues a four-game home stand next weekend, hosting Salve Regina on Friday and Manhattanville on Saturday.
