PSU Women’s Ice Hockey powers past Johnson & Wales

Panthers earn weekend sweep over Wildcats

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Senior Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa.) scored two goals Saturday evening as the Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team blanked Johnson & Wales University for the second straight night, this time 3-0 at Lynch Arena.

Plymouth State extended its program-best winning streak to four in a row, and the Panthers head into the mid-season break at the .500 mark at 6-6 overall. The Wildcats remain winless at 0-13.

Sophomore goalie Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kansas) made 11 saves to post the shutout for PSU, her first career whitewash. JWU sophomore Kami Weiner had another incredibly busy night for the Wildcats, making 78 saves as PSU out-shot the home team, 81-11.

Lynch put the Panthers on the scoreboard five minutes into the game, with assists from freshman Kelsey Roy (Fort Collins, Colo.) and junior Paige Roberts (Plaistow, N.H).  PSU out-shot the Wildcats 26-5 in the first period but led only 1-0.

Despite the heavy shot advantage, Weiner kept the Wildcats in the game. Lynch finally broke through again at 12:15 of the second period with a short-handed goal to double the Panther lead. Lynch also had a two-goal game last Saturday and has a team-leading six goals on the season.

Senior Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) kept the momentum going and tacked on PSU's third goal less than four minutes later, her first goal of the season. That turned out to be all the scoring, as the goaltenders denied all further shots.

After a break for final exams and the holidays, Plymouth State returns to action at the DoubleTree hockey Classic at Saint Michael's College on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 8-9, 2016. The Panthers will play Sacred Heart University on Friday the 8th and Hamilton College on Saturday the 9th.
