Panthers drop one-goal game at Saint Michael's Tourney
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior Alycia Racicot (Norfolk, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal early in the third period Saturday afternoon as Hamilton College skated past Plymouth State University, 2-1, on the second day of the 11th annual DoubleTree Women's Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena.
Sacred Heart University defeated tournament host Saint Michael's College, 5-0, in Saturday's second game to capture the tournament title. Sacred Heart knocked off PSU by the same score on Friday night.
Junior Emily Auby (Stoughton, Wis.) scored Plymouth State's lone goal Saturday with help from classmate Haley Branovan (Canandaigua, N.Y.) as the Panthers fell to 6-8. Sophomore Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kansas) collected 32 saves and Branovan was named to the all-tournament team.
Hamilton senior Hannah Bartlett (Marshfield, Mass.) also scored for the 6-3-1 Continentals. Senior Ianthe Lekometros (Teaneck, N.J.) had an assist and sophomoreSam Walther (Gambrills, Md.) made 13 stops. Bartlett and freshman Olivia Hawes (Spring, Texas) both secured all-tournament team nods.
Hamilton led shots, 12-4, during a scoreless opening period. During a scrum in front of the net at 12:40, Trupp stood tall by stopping a five-shot barrage by the Continentals. Plymouth State's Frederike Brazeau-Lalonde's (Thetford Mines, Que.) had the Panthers' best chance when she raced down the left side and wristed a shot into Walther's pads at 7:15. Auby gave Plymouth State the lead just 1:09 into the second stanza when she potted a short-handed goal after getting the rebound from Branovan's initial shot. Hamilton pulled even with 1:40 remaining in the period after picking up her own blocked shot and snapping home the second-chance bid under Trupp's glove.
The Continentals pulled ahead 2:27 into the third period after Racicot snapped home a shot with help from Lekometros. Plymouth State's best chance to equalize came at 6:25 as senior Marisa Zamrock (Lewiston, Maine) darted up ice on a breakaway, but Walther charged out and made a forward diving poke check to break up the bid. Trupp was then pulled for good with 58 seconds remaining and Branovan's point shot served as the Panthers' last chance.
PSU returns to New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday, hosting Castleton University at Hanaway Rink at 6:00 p.m.
