Panthers' game Saturday postponed by storm
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Manhattanville College made a pair of first period goals stand up Friday evening, posting a 2-0 victory over Plymouth State University in a women's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game at Hanaway Rink.
Freshman goalie Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass.) made 19 saves for the Valiants to record her second shutout of the season. Freshman Emelie Lindqvist (Gullerason, Sweden) shut down the visitors over the final two periods for PSU and also finished with 19 saves but took the loss.
The Valiants improve to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while PSU dips to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the NEHC.
Manhattanville got on the board when sophomore Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J.), who leads the team with nine assists, picked up her first goal of the season eight minutes into the game. Kapur stole the puck in the neutral zone, skated over the blue line and fired a shot over Lindqvist's shoulder just under the crossbar.
Freshman Jordan Roetzer (Buffalo, N.Y.) doubled the lead for the Valiants on a power play at the 15:18 mark, knocking home a rebound after Lindqvist made the initial save on a shot by junior Kayley Romano (Viera, Fla.).
That turned out to be all of the scoring in a very defensive game as the teams combined for just 40 shots (Mville 21, PSU 19) and four penalties, two on each side.
Manhattanville plays again on Saturday at New England College at 1:00 p.m. PSU's game Saturday at Hanaway Rink vs. Salve Regina has been postponed due to the winter storm. The Panthers will return to the ice with an NEHC game next Friday at home against Norwich University (6:00 p.m.)
