Lindqvist makes 33 saves in goal for Panthers
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England scored a pair of third-period goals, and Sydney Helmbrecht stopped all 17 shots she faced as the Nor'easters shut out Plymouth State University, 2-0, in a New England Hockey Conference women's game Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Nor'easters, who improved to 11-5-2 overall and 6-4-1 in conference play. Plymouth State dropped to 6-13-0 (2-9-0 NEHC).
Despite outshooting the Panthers 24-10 over the first two periods, UNE was unable to get into the scoring column until Shannon Smith (JR/Naperville, Ill.) scored one minute into the third. Smith stuffed home a rebound of her own shot that was stopped initially by PSU goaltender Emelie Lindqvist (FY/Gullerasen, Sweden). Annie Mullen (SO/Concord, N.H.) was credited with an assist.
UNE would double its lead at the 8:38 mark while on the power play when Julianne Sheehan (FY/Chelmsford, Mass.) tucked in a rebound after a scramble in front of the cage. Gabby Crugnale (JR/Malden, Mass.) and Kimberly Gosselin (JR/Concord, N.H.) set-up the scoring play.
The Panthers had several quality scoring opportunities to get on the board in the third period. The first came 4:30 into the frame when Shannon Hickey (SO/Arlington, Mass.) broke in up the left side. Helmbrecht dropped to her pads and stoned Hickey at the top of the left side of the crease. The second came in the closing minutes when Plymouth pulled Lindqvist in favor of an extra skater after UNE was whistled for a minor penalty with 3:05 remaining. The Nor'easters would kill off the PSU power play opportunity, and continued with a strong defensive effort the final 1:05 as Plymouth elected to go with an extra skater.
Helmbrecht's shutout was her fourth of the season and sixth of her career. Lindqvist totaled 33 stops for the Plymouth State, which trailed 35-17 in shots on goal.
Both teams return to action next Friday at home. UNE hosts College of the Holy Cross at 4 p.m., while the Panthers take on the University of Southern Maine at 6 p.m.
