Jackson scores, Lindqvist makes 28 saves for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Taylor Jackson (St. Albans, Vt.) scored a short-handed goal and classmate Emelie Lindqvist (Gulleråsen, Sweden) turned aside 28 shots as the Plymouth State University women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) foe University of New England at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon.
With the tie the Panthers move to 1-1-1 (1-0-1 NEHC), while UNE ends its opening weekend road trip with a 1-0-1 (1-0-1 NEHC) mark.
The visitors got on the scoreboard in the opening period after a shot from the point missed wide. The rebound caromed off the end boards right to junior Julianne Sheehan (Chelmsford, Mass.), who beat Lindqvist low to the glove side.
PSU had a great scoring opportunity midway through the period as a UNE turnover led to a 3-on-1 rush for the Panthers, but a shot from senior Jaime Carpenter (Jardenville, N.B.) missed high.
The second period saw a barrage of shots for both teams. Lindqvist was tested 12 times, but she turned them all away to keep the Panthers within a goal. Midway through the period PSU evened the game with a special team's goal. During a penalty kill situation, senior Shannon Hickey (Arlington, Mass.) skated toward the right end boards then sent a pass into the slot to Jackson who finished to the back post.
Neither team was able to put in a go-ahead goal in the third period or the extra frame. PSU had perhaps the best scoring opportunity deep in the third period when junior Brooke Maggy (Alhambra, Calif.) stole the puck and skated in alone, but after a series of moves her backhanded shot was covered up by UNE sophomore goalkeeper Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.). Flagg finished with 27 saves.
The Panthers open up a four-game road trip at Norwich University next Friday (Nov. 10). Puck-drop against the Cadets, the preseason NEHC favorites, is set for 7:00 p.m. UNE will play its home-opener against Salve Regina on Friday (Nov. 10) at 7:00 p.m.
