Linnick scores lone goal, Lindqvist earns second shutout
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Sydney Linnick (Highland's Ranch, Colo.) scored her third goal of the year and junior Emelie Lindqvist (Gulleråsen, Sweden) stopped all 30 shots she faced as Plymouth State University topped Salve Regina University, 1-0, in women's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory Plymouth State improved to 2-3-2 overall (2-2-2 NEHC), while Salve falls to 1-7-0 and 1-5-0 in league play.
Linnick scored at the 1:29 mark of the second period. Salve Regina opened the second period with 1:04 remaining on a power play opportunity, but the Panthers killed off the remaining time and used the momentum to break through. Linnick grabbed a loose puck and cut to the outside as she moved into the Seahawks' zone, catching SRU in a two-on-one situation. Linnick skated to the front of the goal and snapped a shot off the glove of junior goaltender Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) to give the Panthers the lead.
Salve had opportunities to even the score, but continued strong play in net by Lindqvist, and a little luck, kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard. Though the hosts outshot PSU 17-9 in the second period, Lindqvist was up the challenge. SRU's best scoring opportunity came in the third period when freshman Suzi Pearson (York, England) had a shot from the low slot go off the pipe. The loose puck sat on the goal line, but a PSU defenseman was able to clear it away.
Both teams had multiple power play opportunities, but the defenses were exceptional. PSU held Salve Regina to 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Panthers went 0-for-6 with the skater advantage.
Plymouth State is off next week for the Thanksgiving holiday, before returning to the ice on Saturday, Dec. 2. PSU will host Salem State for a Teddy Bear Toss game at 2:00 p.m. The Seahawks will play at Wesleyan University on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at 7:00 p.m.
