PSU Women’s Ice Hockey skates past St. Michael’s in Trader Duke’s finale

Hudson, Kennedy named to All-Tournament Team

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomores Eleanor Hudson (Baltimore, Md.) and Kailey Jacobs (Westwood, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist apiece to lead Plymouth State University to a 4-1 win over host St. Michael's College in the final game of the 13th annual Trade Duke's Ice Hockey Classic Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena.

Classmates Alexis Fagan (Wakefield, R.I.) and Sydney Linnick (Highland's Ranch, Colo.) each added goals as the Panthers improved to 3-6-3 on the year. With the loss the Purple Knights fall to 2-12-0.

PSU finished second in the four-team tournament going 1-0-1 on the weekend. Hamilton College, who the Panthers tied 1-1 on Friday afternoon, also ended 1-0-1, but was named team champion based on goal differential after topping Southern Maine, 6-1, in the day's other game. Hudson and junior Mackenzie Kennedy (Brea, Calif.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Jacobs got the scoring started at the 6:36 mark of the first period. After receiving a pass from sophomore Alie Louie (Mount Laurel, N.J.), the 5-4 forward skated down the left boards and shot a wrister to beat junior goaltender Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt.) high. About a minute later, freshman Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass.) had a chance to tie the game during a two-on-one break, but senior goalie Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kansas) made a key save.

Linnick doubled the PSU lead at the 9:45 mark when her slapshot from the top of the right circle sailed through traffic and hit a Purple Knight player, causing the puck to deflect past Talcott. It was her team-leading fourth tally of the season.

The Panthers struck again at 16:31 when Hudson capitalized after the puck squirted out from a battle in front of the SMC goal. Hudson hit a back-hander to the back right of the net to put the visitors in front 3-0.

Fagan accounted for the fourth goal with a strong personal effort in the second period. After stripping the puck from an SMC player in the neutral zone, she skated past a defender into the offensive zone and sailed a shot past Talcott from the right faceoff dot at the 9:34 mark for her third goal of the year.

SMC had another scoring chance with a two-on-one break in the third period. Senior Ashley Dineen (Somers, N.Y.) collected a pass from sophomore Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I.) and fired a one-timer from point-blank range, but Trupp made the stop. The Purple Knights spoiled Trupp's shutout bid with a power play tally at 18:26 of the third period. Senior Jillian Witwicki (Danvers, Mass.), SMC's selection to the All-Tournament Team, scored her second goal of the season after taking a shot from the low right circle to have the puck hit bar down.

In her first start of the year, Trupp earned the win while making 24 saves. Talcott finished with 37 stops, just three shy of her career-high, but fell to 2-10-0 on the season.

Plymouth State is back at Hanaway Rink on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. New England Hockey Conference contest with New England College.
