PSC Women's Lax captures NEWLA opener over defending champs
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State College women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game Tuesday, and went on to register a key New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance victory over New England College 16-12 in the home opener at Arold Field.
The Panthers improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in NEWLA games, while NEC drops to 1-4 and 1-1. The Pilgrims were the inaugural NEWLA champions last spring, defeating PSC in the regular season (11-10) and in the tournament semi-finals (11-9).
PSC was led by freshman Robin Hartman (Reistertown, MD), who scored four goals for the second straight game. Junior Amanda Beedy (New Hampton, NH) contributed three goals and an assist, senior Faith Wahlen (Hampstead, NH) added two goals and two assists, and sophomore Courtney O'Sullivan (Kingston, NH) tallied two goals and one assist.
The Pilgrims were led by sophomore Jamie Jackman, who scored four goals. Four other players added two goals apiece for NEC --- senior Tilea Warren, junior Emily Frawley, sophomore Jill Jones, and freshman Talbott Britt.
NEC goalie J.B. Kelly registered eight saves, while PSC goalies Lisa Goldberg (Newton, MA) and Brenna Matarazzo (Salem, NH) combined for 14 saves.
PSC took an 8-0 lead and held a 10-3 advantage at halftime. The Panthers extended their lead to 13-3 before NEC came back in the last 20 minutes, but the Pilgrim rally fell short.
The Panthers play another NEWLA home game Thursday (Apr. 8) against the University of New England (3:30 p.m.). NEC plays a NEWLA game Thursday at Keene State (5:00 p.m.).
