PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College clinched first place in the Northern Division of the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance Thursday with a 14-7 victory over in-state rival Keene State at Arold Field.
The Panthers jumped to a 9-1 lead late in the first half, held a 10-3 advantage at the break, and never looked back. The win gives PSC a 7-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in NEWLA's Northern Division, while Keene State drops to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the NEWLA Northern Division.
Freshmen Janet Conner (South Freeport, ME) and Robin Hartman (Reistertown, MD) continued their outstanding rookie campaigns for PSC. Conner scored three goals and assisted on two others, giving her a team-leading 27 goals and 32 points. Hartman contributed a pair of scores to improve her season totals to 20 goals and six assists.
Junior Amanda Beedy (New Hampton, NH) also tallied twice for the Panthers, increasing her numbers to 19 goals and four assists. Senior Faith Wahlen (Hampstead, NH) added two goals and an assist, and sophomore Courtney O'Sullivan (East Kingston, NH) chipped in with two goals. Individual tallies were credited to junior Jess Shapiro (Windsor Locks, CT), sophomore Chrystn Pitt (Freeport, ME), and freshman Cathleen Yackenchick (Greenfield, MA).
The Owls were led by sophomore Liz Thornton (Bedford, NH), who scored a pair of goals. Single goals were scored by Hanna Lozier (Pawcatuck, CT), Claudia Post (Guilford, CT), Marcy Kautz (Brewster, MA), Dee LeGros (Waltham, MA), and Megan Gonyea (Alexandria, VA).
KSC goalie Erin Bonner (E. Stroudsburg, PA) registered nine saves, while PSC goalie Lisa Goldberg (Newton, MA) made six saves in the first half and Brenna Matarazzo (Salem, NH) made eight in the second half.
The Panthers are home again Saturday (Apr. 17) with a non-league game against Bowdoin (1:00 p.m.), and plays its final regular-season NEWLA Northern Division contest Sunday (Apr. 18) at Colby-Sawyer (1:00 p.m.). Keene State travels to Bridgewater State Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game before returning home Sunday for a NEWLA Northern Division match with the University of New England (12:00 p.m.)
