Panthers fall to Wellesley in opener
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Plymouth State College was on the short end of a 13-5 decision Thursday against Wellesley College in the first women's lacrosse game of the 2001 season.
The loss prevented the Panthers from picking up their first win for new coach Wynne Lobel. This is the second straight year that Wellesley has defeated PSC on the teams' spring trip to Florida. Wellesley prevailed over the Panthers last year, 16-4.
Junior Claudia Veritas (Goffstown, N.H.) and sophomore Margot Conrad (Ardmore, PA) scored four goals apiece to lead Wellesley, which held a 9-2 lead at halftime. Senior Christin Bracken (Port Washington, NY) added three goals, and junior Molly Evans (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore Lisa Andruszkiewicz (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in with one apiece.
Plymouth State got two goals apiece from sophomore Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) and Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) and one goal from junior Robin Hartman (Santa Maria, Cal.).
Panther freshman goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) made 19 saves in her collegiate debut.
PSC returns to New England for the remainder of its schedule. The next scheduled game is Tuesday, Mar. 27, at Babson College (4 p.m.).
