Late goal lifts Wheaton past PSC

NORTON, Mass. - Senior Paige Spence (Brookfield, Conn.) broke a 7-7 tie with 1:14 remaining Saturday, and Wheaton College held on for an 8-7 victory over Plymouth State College in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Keefe Field.
With the win, the Lyons improve to 9-4 on the season, while PSC drops to 7-3.
It was a close game the entire way. Trailing 2-0 in the early going, PSC responded with four unanswered goals to take the lead, two from freshman Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.). Wheaton came back with a pair to tie it, as Spence and freshman Lauren Maynes (Barnard, Vt.) each scored for the second time. Sheridan gave PSC a 5-4 halftime lead with her third goal with 1:24 left.
When sophomore Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) scored for PSC with 15:35 to go in the second half to make it 7-7, it was the fifth tie score of the game. Fourteen minutes of scoreless play passed, but in the end Spence provided the game-winner at the 1:14 mark.
Sheridan finished with four goals for PSC, Adey with two goals and an assist, and freshman Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) with one goal and an assist. Spence ended up with three goals for Wheaton, Maynes with three goals, and Julia Lou (Collegeville, PA) with two goals and an assist.
Wheaton had a slight 28-27 advantage in shots on goal, keeping both goalies busy. PSC's Brenna Matarazzo (Salem, N.H.) made 13 saves, and Wheaton's Michelle Siegal registered 15 stops.
PSC continues its weekend road trip with a non-conference game Sunday at Eastern Connecticut (2:00 p.m.) The Panthers return home to host Salem State on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) and Southern Maine on Thursday (4:00 p.m.)
