LEC honors for Sheridan and Gravilla
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two players on the Plymouth State College women's lacrosse team were again recognized by the Little East Conference Monday for their performances in PSC's three victories last week.
Sophomore Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) was named LEC Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman Melissa Gravilla (Andover, N.H.) was selected LEC Defensive Player of the Week. It is the third time this season that Sheridan has been so honored, while Gravilla previously earned the LEC's top rookie weekly award.
Sheridan and Gravilla helped the team to victories over Southern Maine, Babson and Eastern Connecticut last week as the Panthers extended their winning streak to eight games and took over sole possession of first place in the conference.
A sophomore midfielder, Sheridan tallied 11 points (nine goals, two assists) in the three games. She notched four goals in the rout over Southern Maine, added three goals and two assists in a key non-conference win over Babson, and wrapped up the week with two goals against ECSU in a battle of conference unbeatens. Sheridan also collected 12 ground balls and nine draw controls during the week.
Sheridan, who leads the team with 29 goals and 35 points, ranks second in the LEC in points (3.89 per game) and third in goals (3.22 per game). She needs eight points to become the 12th player in school history to reach 100 career points.
A freshman goalie, Gravilla posted a 5.20 goals against average and a .745 saves percentage in three appearances. She matched her season-high with 21 saves in the win at Babson, while helping limit the two LEC opponents to eight goals combined. She made 10 saves without allowing a goal against USM, and added seven saves against ECSU.
Gravilla enters the week ranked second in the conference in both goals against (7.20) and saves percentage (.663). She has helped PSC lead the conference in team defense, allowing only 6.44 goals per game.
Plymouth State, 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the LEC in the first year of conference play, hosts arch-rival Keene State Thursday at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.).
