PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Plymouth State College won its 10th consecutive women's lacrosse game Saturday, defeating Rhode Island College 16-0 in a Little East Conference match-up.
The victory improves the Panthers to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the LEC. The Anchorwomen, in just their second season as a varsity sport, drop to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
PSC jumped all over RIC in the first half, scoring 11 goals before the break. The Panthers had 12 different players score a goal and 13 register at least one point in the win. Senior Brooke Smith (Columbia, S.C.) led the way with three goals, while classmate Robin Hartman (Westminster, Md.) and junior Janet Conner (South Freeport, Maine) contributed two goals and one assist apiece.
The rest of PSC's goal scorers were seniors Karen Hosmer (Westminster, Md.) and Sacha Jackson (Sangerville, Maine), juniors Eileen Rice (Nashua, N.H.), Marushka Eddy (Nantucket, Mass.), Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.), Melissa Cotton (Osterville, Mass.) and Lindsay Breda (Londonderry, N.H.), and sophomores Cathy Berei (Trenton, N.J.) and Amy Harrington (Goffstown, N.H.).
Sophomore Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) got the nod in goal for the Panthers, and made eight saves to record the shutout victory. RIC goalkeeper Lauren Gerde made 12 saves in a losing effort.
Plymouth State returns home to host Bowdoin in a non-conference game Sunday at Arold Field (2:00 p.m.). RIC plays Monday at Salem State.
