PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College scored three goals in the opening minute Saturday afternoon, and went on to defeat Rhode Island College 14-2 in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse game in the home opener at Arold Field.
PSC, the defending LEC champion, improves to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. RIC, a third-year program, falls to 3-6 and 0-3.
The Panthers led 5-0 less than eight minutes into the contest, and held a 12-0 advantage at halftime. PSC emptied the bench in the second half and coasted home with the win.
Freshman Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) led the Panther offense with three goals and two assists. Senior Eileen Rice (Nashua, N.H.), junior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) contributed two goals each for PSC, and seniors Beth Dooly (Goffstown, N.H.) and Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.), junior Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Katie O'Donnell (Plymouth, N.H.) and freshmen Hillary Arthur (Essex Jct., Vt.) chipped in with one goal apiece.
Sheridan's three points (two goals and an assist) push her over the 200-point mark for her career, making her only the second Panther to reach the milestone. She has 148 goals and 54 assists for 202 points in 44 career games.
Sophomores Danielle Beaudry (W. Greenwich, R.I.) and Amanda Hutchins (Gilmanton, N.H.) collected goals for the Anchorwomen.
PSC netminder Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) and RIC's Crystal Colagiovanni (Johnston, R.I.) were each credited with six saves.
Plymouth State is back in action Wednesday with a non-conference clash at Colby-Sawyer (4:00 p.m.). RIC returns home to host Salem State on Monday (4:00 p.m.).
