NEW LONDON, N.H. - Junior Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) scored three goals and four assists Wednesday afternoon, leading Plymouth State College's women's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference match-up at Mercer Field.
The Panthers also got four goals and one assist apiece from junior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.). PSC won for the fifth time in its last six outings, improving to 8-3 overall, while Colby-Sawyer dropped to 6-4.
After the Chargers got on the board first, Sheridan scored three unassisted goals to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage. PSC went up 7-3 midway through the first half before settling for an 11-4 margin at the break. The visitors then rattled off the first six goals of the second half to put the game away and collect its 10th straight win over its intrastate rival.
Although the score was lopsided, the shots on goal indicated the game was closer than the score. PSC had just a 31-28 advantage in shots. Panther junior Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) was solid in net with 16 saves, while CSC's Sarah Cook made six saves.
While Norton, Sheridan and Brown did most of the scoring, the Panthers also got two goals apiece from senior Julie Shields (Whitby, Ont.) and freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) and one each from seniors Beth Dooly (Goffstown, N.H.) and Melissa Cotton (Osterville, Mass.).
Senior Geri Ellen Matyiko (Sharptown, Md.) led the Chargers with three goals, while seniors Jesse Wilfert (Boxborough, Mass.) and Meredith Buzzi (Williston, Vt.) and sophomore Annie Colella (Barrington, R.I.) each scored once in defeat.
PSC returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a 12 noon contest at UMass Dartmouth before returning home to host Western Connecticut Sunday at Arold Field in the regular season finale (12 noon). Colby-Sawyer is headed to Dudley, Mass., on Thursday to take on Nichols (4:00 p.m.).
