PSU Womens Lacrosse wins battle at Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) scored a game-high seven goals Thursday evening to lead the Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team past Springfield College, 15-12, at Benedum Field.
This was a battle of two of New England's top teams. Plymouth State remained unbeaten on the season at 7-0, while Springfield had its six-game winning streak stopped and fell to 6-2.
Plymouth got the game started with four unanswered goals, including a pair by senior midfielder Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.). Sophomore Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.), added a pair of goals as the Panthers increased their lead to 6-1. Sheridan rattled off three unanswered goals late in the half to lead the visitors to a 10-5 lead at the intermission.
SC sophomore Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.), who finished with four goals, scored back-to-back tallies midway through the second half to help pull the Pride to within three goals (12-9), but PSU answered with a pair of goals by Brown and Sheridan, and Sheridan's final goal with 4:26 remaining put the game out of reach.
Sheridan finished with seven goals and one assist, while Brown had four goals and an assist and Norton scored three times and set up another. Freshman Kelsey MacDonald (Oaks Bluffs, Mass.) scored once for the Panthers, and sophomore Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) chipped in with two assists. MacDonald also had a team-high six ground balls.
PSU outshot the Pride 21-7 in the first half and 33-23 in the game. Panther senior goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) was credited with five saves to earn the victory.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference action Saturday with a key game at Eastern Connecticut (2:00 p.m.). It is a rematch of the last two Little East Conference and ECAC New England Championship games; PSU won the LEC titles both years and the ECAC crown last year, while ECSU took the ECAC championship in 2002.
