NEW LONDON, N.H. - Junior Becky Schaffer (Lakeland, Fla.) scored her third goal of the game with 1:11 to play Wednesday afternoon, breaking an 11-11 tie and lifting Colby-Sawyer College past Plymouth State University, 13-11, in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
The outcome marked the first Colby-Sawyer win over Plymouth State in 15 years. Eleven straight losses had elapsed since the Chargers recorded a 10-8 win in Plymouth in 1990. Another streak, that of a three-game losing skid, was ended by the Chargers, as Colby-Sawyer improved to 9-5 this season. PSU is now 5-4.
With the game tied at 8-8 at halftime, the Chargers held PSU scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the second half, while taking a one-goal lead on Schaffer's second goal. It was 10-10 with 12 minutes to play before junior Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) put the Panthers on top, 11-10, with eight minutes left, but Colby-Sawyer scored three times in the final 4:21 to seal the win.
Schaffer and senior Megan Geer (Peterborough, N.H.) both scored three goals for Colby-Sawyer, and senior Lisa Falconi (Waterville Valley, N.H.), freshman Tara Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore Kristen Scott (Underhill, Vt.) added two goals each. Junior Jaime Marcus (West Springfield, Mass.) also chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) scored three times to lead Plymouth State, while Brown and sophomores Kelsey McDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.), and Liz Boddy (Brentwood, N.H.) each scored two goals. Sophomore Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and junior Caitlyn Irving (Avon, Conn.) both added single tallies for the Panthers.
Colby-Sawyer returns to action on Saturday, hosting the University of New England in a key game for Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff seedings. There are five teams (Colby-Sawyer, Endicott, Gordon, UNE, NEC) tied at 5-2 in the conference with a game remaining for each.
PSU plays a pair of Little East Conference road games this weekend - Saturday at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday at Southern Maine (1:00 p.m.)
