PSU Womens Lacrosse edges Springfield
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) scored two goals and the Plymouth State University defense held Springfield College to its second-lowest output of the season Tuesday afternoon as the Panthers edged the Pride, 7-5, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Arold Field.
Plymouth State scored four unanswered goals in the first half to take a 4-1 lead at halftime. The Panthers maintained the lead the entire second half, although the Pride pulled to within a goal at 6-5 with 13 minutes remaining. PSU held on and got an insurance goal with two minutes remaining.
PSU improves to 7-4 overall, while Springfield had its five-game winning streak stopped and dropped to 9-5 overall.
Springfield junior Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game just over four minutes into the contest, but the Pride didn't score again in the first half. PSU came back with four unanswered goals in the first half, one each from MacDonald, junior Caitlyn Irving (Avon, Conn.), sophomore Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.)
Sophomore Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) scored for Springfield just 30 seconds into the second half, but sophomore Liz Boddy (Brentwood, N.H.) answered for PSU two minutes later. Carmody tallied her second of the game a minute later, only to see MacDonald score her second for the Panthers to put the hosts up 6-3 with 24 minutes to play.
The Pride added goals by senior Spring Silverman (Huntington, Pa.) at 14:14 and Carmody (her third) at 12:55, but junior Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) finished off the scoring for PSU with an insurance goal with 2:16 remaining.
Senior Kristin Elliott (Exeter, N.H.) had another strong outing in the Panther goal, making 10 saves for the victory. Junior Shannon Paddock (Dayton, Ohio) made 12 saves in the Pride net.
PSU plays another non-conference home game Saturday against Bridgewater State (2:00 p.m.), and wraps up the regular season Sunday with a make-up game at Southern Maine (1:00 p.m.) Springfield returns home to host Smith College Thursday in its regular season finale (7:00 p.m.)
