BABSON PARK, Mass. - Babson College outscored visiting Plymouth State University 9-3 in the second half Saturday afternoon on its way to a 17-9 victory in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest.
Sophomore Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) led all players with six goals for Babson, and junior Ashley Platt (Centerville, Mass.) added five goals for the winners, while senior Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) paced Plymouth State with four goals. Babson, which defeated Eastern Connecticut 5-4 in its opener on Tuesday, moves to 2-0 on the season while PSU falls to 0-1.
The two teams were tied at 5-5 with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half before Martignetti and Platt netted back-to-back scores within 11 seconds of each other to give Babson a 7-5 lead. Brown then scored for the Panthers with a minute left to make it a one-goal game, but Martignetti answered with 13 seconds remaining to give her team an 8-6 advantage heading into the break.
For the second straight game, Babson exploded out of the gates in the second half, using two four-goal runs to put the contest out of reach. Freshman Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) and Martignetti each netted two goals apiece to start the half as the Beavers went up 12-6, and, after a goal by PSU junior Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) cut the deficit to five, Babson went on another 4-0 run to build a commanding 16-7 lead. That would be more than enough for junior goalie Jennie Williams (Andover, Mass.), who finished with 13 saves in net to clinch the victory.
In addition to Martignetti and Platt's 11 goals, Babson also received four from Godfrey and two from freshman Linsday Bucci (Mendon, Mass.) Godfrey and Bucci also added assists in the win.
Pinault recorded two goals and one assist for Plymouth State, while junior Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) added one goal and two assists. Senior Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) also collected a goal and an assist, and junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) scored once. Freshman goalie Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) played all but seven minutes in net for the Panthers, making eight saves in her collegiate debut.
The Panthers are back in action on Monday, Mar. 20, on the team's spring trip to Florida, facing Trinity College (Conn.) at 4:30 p.m. in Wellington, Fla. Babson travels to Bates for another non-conference game this Tuesday (4:00 p.m.)
