WELLINGTON, Fla. - Junior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 2.4 seconds left in the second overtime Saturday morning to lead the Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team to a dramatic 16-15 victory over Wellesley College. The outcome gave PSU its first win of the season after three losses, while Wellesley dropped to 3-4.
It was a see-saw battle the whole way. Plymouth State had the early advantage, taking a 7-2 lead with 12:33 to play in the first half, but Wellesley rebounded with five straight goals over the next seven minutes. The teams traded goals over the final five minutes of the half and it was 8-8 at the break.
Wellesley took two-goal leads twice in the second half, only to see the Panthers come back to tie on both occasions. The Blue pulled ahead 11-9 and PSU tied it at 11-11 with 16 minutes to play, and the Panthers overcame a 13-11 deficit to tie the game at 13-all with less than eight minutes on the clock.
The Blue took the lead again, but PSU senior Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) scored with 5:36 remaining to tie it at 14-14 and added another with 3:46 to play to give PSU the lead. Wellesley answered with 2:34 left to send the game into overtime, where Spadafora won it for the Panthers.
Brown led PSU with a season-high six goals and one assist, while Spadafora finished with four goals. Junior Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) scored two goals and classmate Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) contributed a goal and two assists, including an assist on the game-winning goal. Single goals were recorded by junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) and seniors Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) and Caitlyn Irving (Avon, Conn.)
Freshman Becca Leclerc (Middleotwn, Md.) led Wellesley with five goals, while senior Julia Hunter (Amherst, Mass.) added three goals.
PSU goalies Sarah Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) and Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) combined to make eight saves.
Plymouth State resumes the New England portion of the schedule this Thursday with a non-conference game at Gordon (4:00 p.m.)
