Plymouth State coasts by RIC in womens lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Plymouth State University clinched at least a share its fifth consecutive Little East Conference women's lacrosse regular season title Saturday afternoon, cruising past Rhode Island College, 17-6.
The Panthers had 10 different players score at least one goal and 11 different players record at least one point. PSU scored the contest's first seven goals and led at the half, 11-1. The Anchorwomen managed five second-half goals, but the outcome was never in doubt.
The Panthers improve to 7-5 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play this spring with a 5-0 mark. PSU also clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament. The Anchorwomen suffer their eighth consecutive loss and fall to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the LEC.
Senior Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) and freshman reserve Melissa Dark (Peterborough, N.H.) led the way for the Panthers with three goals apiece. Junior Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) and seniors Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) and Caitlyn Irving (Avon, Conn.) each tallied twice. Juniors Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.), Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Liz Boddy (Brentwood, N.H.), sophomore Jackie Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Caitlin Hughes (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) all collected one goal each, the first of the season for both Connerty and Hughes.
RIC junior Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, R.I.) had four goals and an assist in a losing effort. Senior Crystal Colagiovanni (Johnston, R.I.) scored a goal on Senior Day. Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Culbertson (North Kingstown, R.I.) made 16 saves.
Sophomore Sarah Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) played goal in the first half for PSU, making six saves and allowing one goal. Freshman Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) played the second half, allowing five goals, while making one stop.
PSU returns home to host Colby-Sawyer on Thursday in a non-conference match-up at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.) RIC will play at Lasell on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
