PSU Womens Lax dumps Bridgewater State in regular season finale
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season Saturday afternoon with its sixth straight victory, a 16-7 non-conference triumph over Bridgewater State College at Swenson Field.
The Panthers improve to 11-5 overall, while BSC wraps up its season at 4-9 overall. PSU, which has won 11 of its last 13 (with the only losses to nationally-ranked Bowdoin and Colby), roars into next week's Little East Conference Tournament.
Plymouth State held Bridgewater State scoreless over the last 12 minutes of the first half while scoring six unanswered goals, turning a 4-2 game into a 10-2 contest at the break. The Panthers tallied three of the first four goals of the second half and never looked back.
Senior Nicole Evans (Scituate, Mass.) led the Panthers with a game-high five goals and one assist, scoring all five in the first half and three during the 10 minute burst to end the half. Classmate Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) contributed two goals and two assists and junior Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) two goals and one assist. Nine different Panthers got into the goal-scoring column, and three others collected assists.
PSU junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) helped dominate the midfield, collecting a team-high 10 ground balls and six draw controls. Freshman Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) recorded with victory in goal.
The outcome gave PSU head coach Paula Habel a victory in her first coaching appearance at her alma mater. She was an All-Star for the Bears before graduating in 2003.
PSU is the top seed in this week's LEC Tournament, and receives a first-round bye on Tuesday. The Panthers will host both semifinal games Friday at Arold Field, with PSU playing in the 1:00 p.m. game. The LEC Championship game is slated for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Arold Field.
